About the SEI The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) dedicated to advancing the state of software engineering and supporting national security.
We solve complex, large-scale problems for strategic government clients by combining rigorous research with disciplined engineering practices. The Opportunity We are seeking several highly motivated, intellectually curious engineering students for our Summer 2027 Internship Program.
This is not a typical "support" internship; you will be integrated into a high-performance team of researchers and engineers working on mission-critical challenges.
As a member of the 2027 Intern Class, you will be expected to operate at the forefront of the industry. We are also looking for candidates who are "AI-Aware"—those who understand how to integrate Agentic AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) to augment engineering workflows, accelerate development, and enhance code analysis.
Your Impact Working alongside world-class experts, you will engage in tasks such as: Prototyping & Development: Designing and implementing software prototypes to address emerging security and engineering challenges.
Vulnerability Research: Analyzing codebases to identify weaknesses, vulnerabilities, and potential attack vectors. Resilience Engineering: Researching and implementing novel methods to improve software robustness and system resilience.
Innovation: Developing new tools, techniques, and automated processes to solve complex software problems faced by the US Government. Scholarly Contribution: Depending on the scope of your project, you may have the opportunity to co-author research findings for publication in academic or industry forums.
Qualifications Minimum Requirements: Current enrollment in a degree-granting program (e.g., Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Software Engineering).
Ability to work on-site at the SEI Pittsburgh, PA office for the duration of the summer 2027 internship. Ability to pass a background check. Eligibility to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Technical Proficiency: Strong software development skills in C++ and proficiency in at least one additional language (e.
g., C, Python, MATLAB, C#, or Java). Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with Linux operating systems and command-line environments. Engineering Methodology: Understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) and experience working within Agile frameworks.
Emerging Tech: Interest in, or experience with, the application of LLMs and Agentic AI to automate or enhance software engineering tasks.
