Position Overview

The Chemotherapy Prep Technician Apprentice is an entry-level pharmacy technician position designed to prepare individuals for advancement into the Chemotherapy Prep Technician I role through a structured apprenticeship program. The apprentice will complete a required apprenticeship program over a specific time frame consisting of on-the-job training, competency assessments, and progressive sterile compounding responsibilities under the direct supervision of qualified pharmacists and experienced chemotherapy preparation technicians.

The apprentice is not considered fully qualified to independently prepare hazardous sterile preparations until all required competencies have been successfully completed and competency requirements for promotion have been met. Successful completion of the apprenticeship does not automatically guarantee promotion. Advancement to Chemotherapy Prep Technician I requires successful completion of all apprenticeship requirements, demonstrated competency, satisfactory performance evaluations, and departmental staffing needs.

Key responsibilities

  • Complete a structured apprenticeship program
  • Participate in all required apprenticeship education and competency activities
  • Perform daily pharmacy operational tasks
  • Assist with preparation and staging of supplies for sterile compounding
  • Stock pharmacy inventory and maintain adequate supply levels
  • Restock IV preparation areas
  • Assist with inventory management
  • Rotate inventory and monitor expiration dates
  • Maintain required pharmacy logs
  • Assist with environmental cleaning activities
  • Maintain cleanroom supplies
  • Assist with crash cart, extravasation kit, and emergency supply maintenance
  • Perform barcode verification activities as assigned
  • Assist pharmacists with workflow preparation activities

Qualifications

Education & Experience

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred

  • Hospital, infusion, or sterile compounding experience

Credential/Licensure

Required

  • PTCB certification or equivalent
  • State Board of Pharmacy registration in the state in which work is performed

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Proficiency in computer applications including word processing and email

  • Knowledge of medication and dose measurement
  • Knowledge of pharmacy law and medical terminology
  • Reliability with a keen eye for detail
  • Additional hours may be required

Apprenticeship Advancement

Promotion remains contingent upon successful completion of all requirements and approval by pharmacy leadership.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Typical clinical environment with a moderate noise level
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, use hands/wrists, climb or balance, talk, hear, and see for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work with fumes or airborne particles, risk of electric shock, and toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Ability to calculate weight-based dosing and apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
  • Ability to carry out detailed written or oral instructions and deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in routine situations
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Physical activities may include climbing, pushing, standing, hearing, walking, reaching, grasping, kneeling, stooping, and repetitive motion
  • Must have good balance and coordination
  • Close visual acuity is required for activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, measuring accurate doses on syringes, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading
  • Some travel may be required
  • Extended hours may be required
