Hardware Engineer Intern - Machine Integration & Test

Bedrock Robotics · SF

Applies on Ashby≈$10-$45/hr

Role overview

What you'll own

  • You'll work alongside construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can't touch.
  • Integrate sensors, compute, and wiring onto machines alongside the hardware team
  • Design brackets, enclosures, and interface hardware in CAD, then help fabricate and install them
  • Build test stands for validating subsystems on the bench instead of in the field

Requirements and eligibility

  • Currently pursuing a BS or MS in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field — or bringing equivalent hands-on experience
  • CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Onshape, or similar)
  • Genuine hands-on shop skills — you've built physical things, not just modeled them
  • Basic electrical competence: harnessing, connectors, multimeter, reading a schematic

Our team includes veterans who helped launch Waymo, scaled Segment to a $3.2B acquisition, and grew Uber Freight to $5B in revenue. Today, we're deploying autonomous systems on heavy construction equipment across the country, improving safety on job sites and accelerating schedules on critical infrastructure projects.

We're not here debating the future of AI. We're deploying it in the real world. In just two years, we've raised $350M and achieved the first fully autonomous excavator deployments in construction.

This is where algorithms meet steel-toed boots. You'll work alongside construction veterans and world-class engineers to solve physical-world problems that simulations can't touch. If you're ready to do meaningful work on hard problems, we'd love to have you join us.

ABOUT THE ROLE & TEAM

Getting an autonomy stack onto a 40-ton excavator is a hardware problem long before it's a software one — brackets, harnesses, enclosures, and interfaces that survive vibration, dust, and weather. As our Machine Integration intern, you'll design and build the physical interfaces between our system and the machine, plus the test stands we use to prove them out before they ever hit a jobsite.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

- Integrate sensors, compute, and wiring onto machines alongside the hardware team

- Design brackets, enclosures, and interface hardware in CAD, then help fabricate and install them

- Build test stands for validating subsystems on the bench instead of in the field

- Run lab tests, capture data, and iterate on designs based on what breaks

- Document build and install procedures so the next machine goes faster than the last

- Close the loop with the field team on what's working and what isn't

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

REQUIRED

- Currently pursuing a BS or MS in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field — or bringing equivalent hands-on experience

- CAD proficiency (SolidWorks, Onshape, or similar)

- Genuine hands-on shop skills — you've built physical things, not just modeled them

- Basic electrical competence: harnessing, connectors, multimeter, reading a schematic

- Willingness to work on and around heavy equipment in PPE

PREFERRED

- Wiring harness design or manufacturing experience

- Exposure to off-highway, automotive, or industrial equipment

- Machining, welding, or 3D printing experience
