Embedded Firmware Engineer Intern

Within Resideo, the Security business develops innovative security, fire, and connected home products that help protect people, property, and businesses. As an Intern, you will work alongside experienced firmware engineers to help develop and modernize touchscreen interfaces for our embedded products. You will contribute to a real engineering project involving embedded Linux devices and help explore opportunities to extend our graphical interface technology to future microcontroller-based products running real-time operating systems (RTOS). This internship offers hands-on experience with embedded software development, cross-platform GUI technologies, and products intended for production. We invite you to discover why a career with Resideo is an opportunity to learn from talented engineers, contribute to innovative technologies, and help create a safer, smarter, and more connected world. JOB DUTIES: • Assist in a touchscreen user interface design with a modern embedded graphics framework. • Recreate existing GUI screens, layouts, graphics, fonts, animations, and user interactions while maintaining a consistent look and user experience. • Develop reusable GUI components, including buttons, labels, icons, menus, dialogs, and other touchscreen controls. • Help develop tools and scripts to automate repetitive parts of the GUI migration process and improve development efficiency. • Integrate and test graphical interfaces on embedded Linux devices powered by 32bit/64bit processors. • Assist in integrating video streaming and graphical overlays within the Linux-based GUI environment. • Explore adapting the GUI framework for future embedded products running real-time operating systems (RTOS) on microcontrollers. • Investigate differences between Linux and RTOS environments and help identify opportunities to reuse GUI components and application logic across platforms. • Test touchscreen interfaces, troubleshoot software issues, and compare the new interfaces against existing designs. • Help optimize graphics performance, memory usage, and storage requirements for resource-constrained embedded devices. • Collaborate with firmware engineers to develop reusable software components and establish a consistent approach to GUI development across multiple hardware platforms. • Document implementation details, test results, and recommendations to support future development and maintenance. YOU MUST HAVE: • Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. • Basic programming experience in C or C++; familiarity with functions, structures, pointers, and debugging is beneficial. • Basic understanding of software development concepts, including testing, troubleshooting, and version control. • Familiarity with programming fundamentals and an interest in learning new software frameworks and development tools. WE VALUE: • Interest in embedded systems, graphical user interfaces, firmware, or real-time software development. • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a willingness to investigate unfamiliar technical challenges. • Attention to detail when reproducing graphical interfaces and validating software behavior. • Good communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with experienced engineers. • Self-motivation, curiosity, and a willingness to learn through hands-on engineering work. • Experience with C/C++, Git, GitHub, or other source-control tools. • Exposure to Linux command-line tools, embedded Linux, or software build systems such as Make or CMake. • Familiarity with microcontrollers or development boards used in embedded projects. • Exposure to RTOS concepts, such as task scheduling, interrupts, and resource constraints. • Experience with graphical user interfaces, touchscreen applications, graphics libraries, or multimedia software. • Familiarity with hardware interfaces, display controllers, or touchscreen input. • Exposure to Yocto, Wayland, or video streaming technologies. WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU: • Real-world engineering experience: Apply your classroom knowledge to embedded software development for products intended for commercial production. • Work alongside talented firmware engineers: Learn directly from experienced engineers specializing in embedded software, Linux, microcontrollers, and hardware integration. • Contribute to production products: Help develop software that can become part of our actual products, giving your work a meaningful impact beyond a classroom or demonstration project. • Gain cross-platform development experience: Work with embedded Linux systems and help explore future deployments on RTOS-based microcontroller platforms • Build valuable technical skills: Develop hands-on experience with C/C++, GUI development, touchscreen interfaces, debugging, performance optimization, and embedded software architecture. • Learn professional engineering practices: Gain exposure to source control, code reviews, software testing, technical documentation, and collaborative development workflows. • Explore resource-constrained computing: Learn how to design and optimize software for devices with limited memory, processing power, and storage. • Take ownership of meaningful work: Contribute to a substantial engineering initiative, solve real technical challenges, and build accomplishments you can discuss in future interviews. #LI-Hybrid #LI-YC2
