- Working under the direction of experienced technicians and engineers, the apprentice learns to prepare test articles and equipment, operate test systems, collect accurate data, identify abnormal conditions, and maintain a clean, safe, and controlled test environment.

- Assist with the setup, inspection, operation, and breakdown of cryogenic test equipment, test stands, fixtures, and supporting systems.
- Clean, inspect, prepare, and assemble components, piping, hoses, valves, fittings, and test hardware while maintaining required cleanliness and material compatibility.
- Support leak checks, pressure checks, functional checks, cooldown, steady-state testing, and controlled warmup activities under supervision.
- Connect and verify sensors, instrumentation, electrical leads, and data-acquisition channels in accordance with approved documentation and direction.

Role Summary
The Apprentice Cryogenic Test Technician supports the safe setup, operation, monitoring, and documentation of cryogenic testing activities while completing structured on-the-job training. Working under the direction of experienced technicians and engineers, the apprentice learns to prepare test articles and equipment, operate test systems, collect accurate data, identify abnormal conditions, and maintain a clean, safe, and controlled test environment. The role is intended to build practical proficiency in cryogenic systems, mechanical assembly, instrumentation, test procedures, and quality documentation.
Key responsibilities
- Follow approved test procedures, work instructions, drawings, checklists, safety requirements, and quality controls.
- Assist with the setup, inspection, operation, and breakdown of cryogenic test equipment, test stands, fixtures, and supporting systems.
- Clean, inspect, prepare, and assemble components, piping, hoses, valves, fittings, and test hardware while maintaining required cleanliness and material compatibility.
- Support leak checks, pressure checks, functional checks, cooldown, steady-state testing, and controlled warmup activities under supervision.
- Connect and verify sensors, instrumentation, electrical leads, and data-acquisition channels in accordance with approved documentation and direction.
- Monitor pressure, temperature, flow, vibration, and other test parameters; promptly communicate abnormal readings, equipment behavior, leaks, alarms, or unsafe conditions.
- Record test configurations, equipment identification, serial numbers, readings, timestamps, observations, and results accurately and legibly.
- Assist experienced personnel with troubleshooting test equipment, instrumentation, valves, pumps, piping, and related mechanical or electrical systems without making unauthorized adjustments.
- Handle, store, and support the transfer of cryogenic fluids and compressed gases in accordance with established procedures and required personal protective equipment.
- Perform routine equipment checks, basic preventive maintenance, tool control, calibration-status verification, and housekeeping activities.
- Maintain an orderly work area and support 5S, contamination-control, and continuous-improvement practices.
- Participate in training, safety meetings, pre-test reviews, post-test reviews, and lessons-learned activities.
- Work cooperatively with technicians, engineers, quality personnel, and other team members to complete testing safely and accurately.
Required qualifications

Physical and Work Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and to bend, reach, kneel, crouch, and work around test equipment as tasks require.
- Ability to lift, carry, position, and secure tools, hoses, fixtures, and components using safe handling practices and available lifting assistance.
- Manual dexterity and visual attention sufficient to assemble fittings, connect instrumentation, use tools, and read gauges, labels, and test documentation.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, which may include safety glasses, face protection, gloves, hearing protection, protective footwear, and cryogenic protective equipment.
- Ability to work safely in an industrial test environment that may include machinery, pressurized systems, compressed gases, cryogenic fluids, noise, temperature variation, and controlled-access areas.
- Ability to remain attentive during test setup, active testing, controlled shutdown, and extended monitoring activities.
Development Expectations
- Complete assigned safety, quality, technical, and equipment-specific training within established timeframes.
- Progress through defined apprentice competencies by demonstrating safe work practices, procedural discipline, accurate documentation, and increasing technical proficiency.
- Build practical knowledge of cryogenic fluid behavior, pressure and vacuum fundamentals, mechanical assembly, instrumentation, test-system operation, and hazard controls.

- Demonstrate increasing ability to recognize abnormal conditions, perform basic troubleshooting, and explain test steps and system functions.
- Maintain required training and qualifications and complete additional certifications or task sign-offs assigned as part of the development program.
