All with the support, rewards and recognition you need to thrive – during your internship and beyond. Substation Field Engineering is responsible for providing technical support for the operation, maintenance, and reliability of SPS substations.

Working closely with Substation Field Operations, engineers oversee the replacement, repair, and modernization of critical substation equipment that supports the safe and reliable transmission and distribution of electric power.

The team serves hundreds of Xcel Energy substations across Texas and southeastern New Mexico and is composed of six engineers based in Amarillo and Lubbock.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to: • Support engineers in the execution of substation capital and maintenance projects.

• Develop proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings. • Assist with troubleshooting substation equipment and evaluating corrective actions.

• Review equipment test results and help assess equipment condition and performance. • Manage assigned small-scope engineering projects from planning through completion.

• Gain exposure to substation design, maintenance, testing, and field operations while working alongside experienced engineering professionals. This position is for a May 24, 2027 start date.

This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Minimum Requirements: • Current student, Freshman or higher • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering • Frequent day travel will be required.

Overnight travel may be required for specific projects, but is rare. • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the school year (up to 20 hours a week) and commuting to the designated work location in-person, per our hybrid work policy.
