Half of All Open Internships Are for Summer 2027

We counted 36,522 live internship listings. 18,128 are for summer 2027, and spring 2027 has just 1,570. What that means if you're applying now.

Summer 2027 is most of the internship market right now. Of 36,522 live listings UTern counted on October 28, 2026, 18,128 (about half) were summer 2027 roles. Spring 2027 had 1,570 and winter 2027 had 1,349. If you want summer, this is the busy season; if you want spring, the pool is far smaller, so apply now.

Every Wednesday we pick one number from the internship market and explain what it means for your search. This week's number is half.

The number

On October 28, 2026, UTern counted 36,522 live internship, co-op and apprenticeship listings from 5,336 employers. 18,128 of them, about half, are for summer 2027.

That's half of everything, including the listings that never say when they start. Of the 28,497 listings that do name a start term, summer 2027 is almost two in three.

Everything else is small

Here is every start term with live listings, as each listing states it:

Start termLive listings
Summer 202718,128
Spring 20271,570
Winter 20271,349
Fall 2027338
Fall 2026327
Summer 202897

There are more than 11 summer 2027 listings for every spring 2027 listing. Spring and winter together come to 2,919, about 8% of the market.

Off-cycle roles exist, and co-ops in particular often run on spring or winter terms. But spring 2027 starts in a few months, so if you need a spring or winter placement, the roles posted now are the ones you have to work with.

Summer isn't finished arriving

Half the market being summer 2027 doesn't mean every summer program is already up. We track when programs first appear across 726 employers with three or more recruiting cycles on record. 412 of them usually first list between June and October. The other 314 usually first appear in November or later, some as late as spring.

So the summer pool is big now and will keep growing through the winter. Apply to what's open as you find it, and check back for the late arrivals.

What to do with it

  1. If you want summer, apply in batches now. Half the market is already open to you. Pick the roles that fit and work through them weekly, not all at once in January.
  2. If you want spring or winter, go today. The pool is small, and you can browse all of it: spring 2027 and winter 2027.
  3. Treat the day you find a role as its deadline. Last week's number: only 3% of listings say when they close.
  4. Know which kind of role you're applying to. A co-op runs differently from a summer internship. Here's the difference.

How we counted

The listing counts come from UTern's live internship feed, read from employer career pages and applicant tracking systems on October 28, 2026. A listing counts under a start term only if the listing itself states it; each listing states at most one, so the start-term rows don't double count. Listings that never name a season are in the 36,522 total but under no term. Program timing comes from the public history of the SimplifyJobs internship tracker (May 2020 to present), counting only employers with three or more cycles.

Both datasets update on our internship statistics page. Quote it with a link back.
