Internship data
How many internships are open right now?
34,702 internship, co-op and apprenticeship listings from 5,018 employers are live on UTern. They are read from employer career pages and applicant tracking systems, and a listing leaves the count once its stated deadline passes. See them by field, city and start term →
How many students want an internship and don't get one?
In 2023, an estimated 8.2 million learners wanted an internship and 3.6 million had the chance to do one, so more than half of those who wanted one went without. Source: Business-Higher Education Forum, Expanding Internships (2024), estimates for 2023. Read the BHEF report ↗
When do summer internship programs open?
Across 726 employers whose summer programs have been tracked in three or more recruiting cycles, the middle program is first listed on October 14. Finance and consulting often recruit close to a year ahead, and smaller employers keep posting through the spring. See the opening calendar →
How many internships close in the next two weeks?
435 live listings state an application deadline inside the next 14 days. Most listings state no deadline at all, so a role with no date can still close without notice.
How many internships say what they pay?
24,073 of 34,702 live listings (69%) state pay. That is a count of listings that say so, not an estimate of how many internships are paid. Browse internships that state pay →
Where does UTern's internship data come from?
Listings are read directly from employers' own careers sites and applicant tracking systems, including Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, Workday, SmartRecruiters and Workable, and refreshed every day. They are not resold from a job-board feed. The opening calendar comes from the dated history of the community internship tracker, and pay benchmarks from certified US Department of Labor filings.
Can I quote UTern's numbers?
Yes. Every figure on the statistics page is computed from a named dataset when the page is generated, and the date it was counted is printed with it. Quote it with a link back to the page. Internship statistics →
For students
What is UTern?
UTern gives every student one agent, Birdee, from enrollment to employment. Today Birdee finds the few real internships that fit, turns class projects, jobs, clubs and GitHub into skills on the student's Record, and drafts application answers from the student's real work for the student to edit and submit.
Does UTern apply for me?
No. Birdee drafts every answer from your real work, side by side with the application, and you edit and submit it yourself. Companies hiring on UTern see a student only after that student says yes to their role.
Do I need a resume?
No. Tell Birdee what you have done (class projects, jobs, clubs, GitHub) and the skills go on your Record. Birdee checks a skill through a conversation about your own work. There are no quizzes.
What does UTern cost?
UTern is free for students. Companies post a role for $0 and pay only when they hire; the employer page has the details. Pricing for hiring teams →
For companies and contact
How do companies find students on UTern?
A company describes the work and Birdee scopes the project. Birdee finds students whose work fits and reads each Record against the scope without the student's name or photo. Each student says yes to the role before the company sees them, and the company interviews and decides. UTern for hiring teams →
