Internship statistics: what is open, when it opens, what it pays
Three datasets, counted rather than estimated: the internships live on UTern right now, the dates employers' programs have actually appeared across past recruiting cycles, and what employers file with the US Department of Labor for the same kinds of work.
Method. Every figure below is computed when this page is generated, from the dataset named under it. Nothing is rounded up, modelled or carried over: when a source cannot be read, its section is left off the page rather than filled in with an estimate. Figures on this copy were read September 1, 2026. Free to quote with a link back to this page.
How many internships are open right now?
14,135 internship, co-op and apprenticeship listings from 2,571 employers are live on UTern, the newest of them listed September 2, 2026. Listings are read from employer career pages and applicant tracking systems, and a listing drops off this count once its stated deadline passes.

The pay and deadline counts are counts of listings that say so, not estimates of how many roles are paid or time limited. Most job feeds carry neither field, which is the finding.

These three tables are counts per page, not a split of the total, and they will not add up to it. A listing whose title fits two fields is counted under both, and one naming two cities appears under both; each page also collapses near-duplicates, the same role posted under several requisition ids, which the site-wide total does not. Start terms are the exception, because a listing states at most one, and a listing that never states a season is in the total but under no term at all.

When do internship programs actually open?
Across 726 employers whose summer programs have been tracked in three or more recruiting cycles, the middle of the pack first appears on October 14. Half of those employers first appear between September 3 and December 13. Being ready by October 4 puts a student ahead of the median program.

These are dates a program was first tracked, not dates an employer announced. The tracker trails a real opening by days at most, but the honest word is tracked. An employer needs three or more cycles before it appears in any of the figures above: two cycles is a coincidence and one is an anecdote. Months are read in recruiting-cycle order, June to May, because that is the shape of a summer cycle; the handful of programs first listed even earlier than that window are counted under the calendar month they fall in.

What do these employers pay for this kind of work?
Not internship pay, and this page will not pretend otherwise. Every US employer sponsoring a work visa or a green card has to disclose the wage it offers, the occupation and the worksite, and the Department of Labor publishes all of it. Across 6,249 employers and 268,383 certified FY2026 filings, the figures below are what those employers pay full-time staff for each occupation. Read it as the ceiling of the ladder a student is stepping onto, not as what an intern is offered.

How to read a row. Each employer in the dataset has one annualised median per occupation, computed over its own certified filings, and only where it filed at least 5of them. “Median employer” is the middle value of those employer medians, and “middle half” is the 25th to 75th percentile of the same list. It is a median of medians, so it describes a typical employer, not a typical worker. A group is published only once at least 5 employers stand behind it. Hourly, weekly and monthly filings are annualised; a filing whose unit cannot be read is dropped rather than guessed at.

Nationwide scope; the per-state aggregates in the same table are not mixed in here, because every filing is counted in both its state and the national roll-up. 12,096 aggregate rows in scope.
How is this page put together?
Three separate datasets, each computed at generation time and each named where it is used. No figure on this page is typed by hand.
- Live listings. Read from employer career pages and applicant tracking systems, not from aggregator reposts. Listings past their stated deadline are excluded, and postings with a title and nothing else are excluded from every count.
- Opening calendar.Built from the git history of the community internship tracker, which is a dated public record of when each program was first listed. Claim strength follows the evidence: three or more cycles earns “usually”, two earns “in recent cycles”, and one season is stated as a fact about that season and never extrapolated.
- Wage benchmarks. Aggregates only, never individual filings. Certified filings only: a denied or withdrawn application is not evidence of what anyone pays.
