Summer 2027 software engineering internship season is already underway. On October 11, 2026, UTern tracked 2,715 live software engineering internships starting Summer 2027, from 1,043 employers. Across employers tracked over several recruiting cycles, the median summer program first posts around October 14, so the next few weeks are when the most seats open.
If you're going for a software engineering internship next summer, it can feel like everyone around you already has three offers and a return letter. They probably don't. But the season really has started: big employers have been posting Summer 2027 roles for weeks, and the busiest stretch is right now.
So, no panic. Just a plan.
How many are open right now
On October 11, 2026, UTern tracked 2,715 live software engineering internships starting Summer 2027, from 1,043 employers, including TikTok, Nvidia and Google. That count comes straight from employer career pages and applicant tracking systems, refreshed daily, and you can see every one of them here.
Across every field, 22,415 live internships starting Summer 2027 were already up, from 5,203 employers. Here's the full Summer 2027 internship list.
When the rest open
UTern tracks when employers first post their summer programs, using the dated history of the community internship tracker across several recruiting cycles. Across 726 employers whose summer programs show up in three or more cycles:
- The median program first posts around October 14.
- Half first post between September 3 and December 13.
- Being ready by early October puts you ahead of the typical program.
So if you haven't started, you haven't missed it. But the window where the most seats are open is now through the end of the year, and a lot of internships fill on a rolling basis long before any deadline shows up. The full picture is on our internship statistics page and in When to Apply for Summer Internships.
Why it feels so competitive
Because it is. Software engineering internships are some of the most applied-to roles out there, and a single posting can pull in hundreds of applications. That's why blasting out applications doesn't work: one more generic application in a stack that size just blends in. We got into how many to send in How Many Internships Should You Apply To?.
If the rejections or the silence are getting to you, that's not a verdict on you. It's what a pile that size does to everyone in it.
What to do this week
- Update your résumé with your strongest project first. For software roles, one finished project with code someone can read beats a long list of languages.
- Make a target list across big companies, midsize companies and startups. The biggest names open first and get the most applicants; midsize companies often post later with way fewer.
- Apply in the first week or two a role goes up.
- Start prepping for online assessments. A lot of software internships send a coding test soon after you apply. A few problems a week now is much easier than cramming later.
- Practice your intro. See How to Answer "Tell Me About Yourself".
Where to look
New postings show up first on employer career pages and hiring systems like Greenhouse, Lever and Workday, before job boards pick them up. We went through every source in Where to Find Internships.
