Questions
Before you start looking.
When should I apply for summer internships?
Earlier than most students expect. Many large programs open in August and September for the following summer, and finance and consulting often recruit a full year ahead. Smaller companies post much later, through the spring, so there is no single deadline to plan around. That is the reason Bob watches postings continuously and tells you when something that fits you opens, rather than leaving you to check job boards on a schedule.
Can I get an internship with no experience?
Yes, and it is the normal case. What replaces experience is evidence: coursework you can talk about, a project you actually finished, a technical assessment you passed. Employers are trying to answer whether you can do the work, and a class project you can explain in detail answers that better than a job title you held briefly. Bob helps you turn work you have already done into that evidence.
How many internships should I apply to?
Fewer, better applications beat volume. Sending the same resume to two hundred postings gets filtered out at the same rate every time, because nothing in it addresses the specific role. A smaller set where you clear the stated must-haves and show relevant evidence converts far better. Bob is built around finding the roles where you already clear the bar, and showing you what to close where you do not.
Are internships paid?
Many are, and UTern shows the pay when the employer states it. Unpaid internships are legal in the United States only under specific conditions, mostly tied to academic credit and to the student being the primary beneficiary. You can set a pay target and see how each role compares, so an unpaid posting is a decision you make rather than one you discover late.
What does UTern cost?
Students start free. You can search internships, save roles, and work with Bob without paying.
What is UTern?
UTern is an internship platform with an agent attached. Bob is your agent: he searches live internship postings, tells you why you are not getting picked, helps you build evidence for the roles you want, and prepares your applications. Barb is the employer side, which is how companies find students who can already prove they are ready.
