The median summer internship program first appears on October 14, based on 726 employers tracked across three or more recruiting cycles. Half first appear between September 3 and December 13. 412 usually list by the end of October, and 314 usually list in November or later. If you haven't started, you've missed some early programs, but many are still to come.
Every Wednesday we pick one number from the internship market and explain what it means for your search. This week's number is October 14.
The number
Across 726 employers whose summer programs have been tracked for three or more recruiting cycles, the median program first appears on October 14. Half of those employers first appear between September 3 and December 13.
That date has already passed for this cycle. So are you late? For some programs, yes. For the whole market, no.
How the year actually breaks down
Here is the month each program is typically first listed, in recruiting-cycle order:
| Month | Employers | Running total |
|---|---|---|
| June | 31 | 31 |
| July | 28 | 59 |
| August | 102 | 161 |
| September | 146 | 307 |
| October | 105 | 412 |
| November | 100 | 512 |
| December | 54 | 566 |
| January | 61 | 627 |
| February | 40 | 667 |
| March | 37 | 704 |
| April | 12 | 716 |
| May | 10 | 726 |
412 of the 726 usually list by the end of October. The other 314 usually list in November or later, and November alone accounts for 100.
Early programs are a different race
The programs tracked for the most cycles skew early. A few of the typical first-listing dates on record:
| Employer | Cycles tracked | Typically first listed |
|---|---|---|
| Morgan Stanley | 7 | June 5 |
| Citadel | 8 | June 29 |
| Jane Street | 7 | July 16 |
| Capital One | 7 | August 1 |
| IMC Trading | 8 | October 5 |
If programs like these are your target, check them now, and put next year's dates in your calendar if you're still an underclassman. These are typical dates, not promises. The same employer can move by weeks or months from one cycle to the next.
What to do with it
- Don't stop because you missed October. More than 300 tracked programs usually haven't appeared yet by November 1.
- Check early-listing programs first. Their roles have usually been up the longest, so find out which are still open. Most listings don't say when they close, so don't assume you have time.
- Set a weekly check through the winter. New programs keep arriving: live summer 2027 listings on UTern went from 18,128 on October 28 to 19,661 on November 2.
- Build your timeline around your field. Our month-by-month guide walks through what to do when.
How we counted
Timing comes from the public history of the SimplifyJobs internship tracker (May 2020 to present), counting only employers with three or more cycles on record. Dates show when the community tracker first listed a role, not when an employer announced it, and the tracker trails a real opening by days at most. It's one tracker's history rather than every internship in the country, and the employers it has followed longest are mostly tech and finance firms, so read it with care if you're in another field. Live listing counts come from UTern's feed, read from employer career pages and applicant tracking systems, and are net totals, so a rise doesn't count only new programs.
All of it updates on our internship statistics page, read for this post on November 2, 2026. Quote it with a link back.
